Christmas is getting closer. And fast. I didn’t even realize it was December due to the weather (the only thing on my wish list is to have a white Christmas). Even if we don’t have yet any snow here in Rauma, we have something very special, something much more meaningful than snow: active people full of Christmas spirit! People, who want to share their spirit with those who need it the most.
I spotted a Facebook post written by local young siblings, who decided not to buy any Christmas presents but use the saved money to do something good instead. So they started a Christmas flower fundraising in co-operation with a local florist. Until Saturday the 22nd of December, anyone can go to the florist’s shop to purchase a flower and leave an anonymous Christmas greeting with the flower. Between the 22nd and the 24th, the florist personnel will deliver the flowers to the local nursing homes for elderly who are lonely, without family and poor.
The idea was so heart-warming that I wanted to make an effort, not only by buying a flower, but also to do my best so that the news would reach as many people in this small town as possible. The meaning of good deeds is emphasized at this time of the year. What makes this event so special is that it was started by regular young people, not by a big charity organization. This event proves that there are so many thoughtful people out there. People who want to make the world a little bit of a better place for all of us. I can only imagine how happy these old, lonely people will be when they receive their flower delivery. It’s a small gesture for many of us, but will have a huge impact on the elderly who don’t have family with whom to spend their Christmas.
Instead of spending money on unnecessary presents, just for sake of buying a present, knowing the receiver wouldn’t even need it, also you can do something good either locally or through worldwide charity organizations. After all, doing a good deed won’t only have a positive affect on the person in need, it will also fill you up with warm feeling. So pay it forward sharing some Christmas spirit!
Peaceful and happy Christmas for all of you!
