A for Adventures
How many new experiences will you get if you just lie on your couch all day long? Not many, not even if another amazing reality TV show would be just about to start. Travelling to a new place is always an adventure, and you don’t necessarily have to go too far from your living room to find one.
B for Beaches
Of course, sandy beaches are a great reason to travel, especially when living in a big city that you secretly call a concrete jungle. A relaxing beach holiday, or just a sunny afternoon at a nearby beach in your hometown, will empty your mind of all worries.
C for Couchsurfing
Are you already familiar with Couchsurfing? If not, I can warmly recommend you to try it out! Free accommodation is only one of the many benefits of Couchsurfing – you’ll get to meet new people, learn about new cultures and expand your perspective. In addition, Couchsurfing hosts are often happy to show their guests around, so in the best scenario, you’ll get a free guide on top. By staying with a local, you will learn things you can’t read from travel guides and see places you’d never find on your own.
D for Dark hours
Have you ever noticed how different the whole world, even the most familiar places, look after dark? Sometimes you just have to stay up a little later to realise the dark beauty around you. I remember falling in love with Vilnius at dark. Taking a moonlight walk on the beautiful streets of Vilnius felt like having two different holidays for the price of one.
E for Events
There is an endless number of events worth travelling for, like Christmas markets, festivals, (rock) concerts, medieval fairs, museum nights, sports events, carnivals and so much more. Just pick the most interesting one and go!
Did you know that you don’t even have to travel all the way to Brazil for Carnival celebration? Europe has its own carnivals as well, Germany is a great example.
F for Friends
Not so long time ago I was writing about travelling for friends. That’s right! Friends are one of the best possible reasons why to travel. Back in 2013, I took a round trip through Italy, Germany and Poland just for friends. A year after moving back home from Germany, I flew back to visit my old office in Düsseldorf and met not only a few but at least a hundred friends at the same time.
In summer 2017, I got a bitter reminder why to travel for friends when you can – because one day, just out of a sudden, it might be too late.
G for Ghosts
Ooh… are you scared? If not, maybe you should participate in a haunted pub tour or spend a night in a haunted hotel. That’s definitely a new kind of experience (unless your own house is haunted). In 2017, I spent a night in the most haunted castle hotel in Northern Ireland. That’s was a night I’ll never forget!
H for Health
Travelling has many health benefits, believe it or not. If you don’t take my word, perhaps you trust this article by Positive Health Wellness listing 8 reasons why travelling is good for your health.
One of the best ways to improve your health – and the best experiences when travelling to a new destination – is to take a hike. You can also have a day hike in your nearest national park or a mountain. You might even find a real paradise like I did when I was hiking in Finnish Lapland or when I took a day trip to Bohemian Switzerland National Park during my city break in Prague in the Czech Republic. The main thing when hiking is to enjoy the fresh air around you. And don’t forget to keep your eyes open – you might even see wild animals as I did on my hike at Sierra Blanca in Spain.
I for Igloo hotel
Have you heard about the Igloo hotel we have here in Finland? Spending a night in an igloo is very likely something you can’t experience in your own country. You might also see the northern lights, which is another fantastic reason for you to travel to Finland.
Finland has a wide selection of destinations for glamping, glamorous camping. In 2016, I spent a night I wanted to last forever in Muonio, Finnish Lapland.
J for Jealousy
Are you annoyed to see how your neighbour is again having a vacation in some cool destination? Do you often find yourself nestling at the corner of your couch, complaining how you never experience anything as fancy as them? Pull yourself together, just book the damn trip! It’s your turn to give your neighbour something to be jealous for!
K for Kids
You’ve never taken your children, grandchildren or sister’s children for a holiday? Not even to a nearby animal garden or amusement park? Do it now; you might enjoy yourself!
L for Last minute deals
I just love the digital age we’re living in! Why? Because the internet is full of websites listing the best last minute offers for travel. Nowadays you could even book a trip when sitting on a toilet, how amazing (or weird) is that?
The best trips always happen without months of planning. The sooner, the better! In addition, last minute trips are often super cheap, like this holiday in the Canary Islands we booked with my friend just two days before the departure. The last-minute surprise trip I organised for my boyfriend with only 100 euros was another success.
M for Museums
Do not say you’re not a museum person. I thought so too until I spent a day as a tourist in my own hometown and visited Rauma Maritime Museum. Yep, you could travel the world for museums, or just visit the nearest one you’ve never been to. You might get surprised!
N for Nature
Again, you don’t necessarily need to travel far to let your mind rest a bit and have a holiday kind of feeling. Just step out of the house and hit the nature. Whether it’s the nearby park, beach, forest, mountain or archipelago, enjoy the benefits of nature and fresh air around you.
Want to stay a little longer? Pack your tent and do it!
O for Occupation
Working abroad can feel like a holiday sometimes, especially when doing it in Spain with a private office on a terrace as I did! Also, check out these reasons why everyone should try living abroad at least once in their lives and my tips for finding a job in Spain.
P for Picnics
Whether you’re taking a trip near or far, a picnic is always a way to go. Who said eating out should be expensive? Grab a blanket, make some sandwiches to go, get a bottle of wine and spend a day in a park with friends.
Q for Quality
Add a little class to your life by travelling and gathering new experiences. As mentioned many times, quality doesn’t need to cost much. You can easily add a pinch of luxury even for a low budget holiday.
R for Restaurants
Don’t fancy the idea of a picnic in a park? Then just find a nice little restaurant and explore the local flavours of your travel destination. After all, travelling is all about gaining new experiences, including new dishes and flavours.
S for Sightseeing
Seeing new places is the main reason why people love travelling, and there are plenty of different ways to do it. When visiting Copenhagen, we took a boat tour, and we loved it!
T for Tan
Yep, the sun is a very common reason to travel, especially among us Finns (we don’t get too much sun here in Finland, as you might now). How to prove to your friends you’ve been on a super sunny holiday? After coming back home, you can show off your beautiful, tanned skin.
U for Understanding the Unknown
Nothing educates and broadens the mind like travelling. By travelling, you will learn languages, about cultural differences, history, tolerance, adaptation and so much more. Just throw yourself into the unknown.
V for Views
When going for a vacation, or even taking that hike in the nearby nature, don’t forget your camera. You will want to capture the amazing views for admiring and remembering your trip when you aren’t able to travel.
W for Weather
Is it too cold? Too hot? Too rainy? Too dry? Is the weather too unpredictable? How about booking a holiday in a destination where the weather is exactly as you like.
X for Xtreme Xperience
You thought I wouldn’t make up a reason why to travel starting with the letter X? Well, you thought wrong! (Even though this could be considered as cheating a bit.) Trying a new extreme sport is always a good reason to get out of the house, whether it’s wakeboarding at the nearby beach or surfing from tree to tree in Germany.

Y for Youth
You’re young, so travel while you still can. Who knows, maybe in a few years time your life has changed so much you won’t be able to do that anymore. Young people often get to travel cheaper as well, for example by staying at youth hostels. Also, InterRail tickets are a lot more affordable for youngsters. The older you get, the more you pay… Sad, but true.
Z for Zero travels
What? Have you never ever stepped over the borders of your home country? Do it now before it’s too late!
